UNC (I) - (ang. uncirculated) - Moneta, która nigdy nie była w obiegu. Może posiadać patynę oraz drobne ryski powstałe w mennicy. Wyraźny połysk menniczy.
EF / XF (II) (ang. extremely fine) - Moneta wsyelekjonowana z obiegu. Charakteryzuje się minimalnymi, niemal niedostrzegalnymi wytarciami. Brak obić na rancie.
VF (III) - (ang. very fine) - Dostrzegalne wytarcia najwyższych częsci monety, powstałe w wyniku obiegu. Możliwe drobne obicia na rancie. MOneta nadal posiada połysk menniczy.
F (IV) - (ang. fine) - Moneta nadal w pełni czytelna, ale z bardzo wyraźnymi śladami obiegu i starciem detali. Liczne ryski, jak i obicia rantu.
VG (V) - (ang. very good) - Moneta mocno zużyta. Fragmenty starte do stopnia uniemożliwiającego ich czytelność, jednak moneta nadal jest w pełni definiowalna. Liczne rysy, obicia rantu i brak połysku menniczego.
G (VI) - (ang. good) - Moneta z trudem identyfikowalna. Mocne wytarcie, jednak część napisów nadal czytelna, co pozwala w pewien sposób określić eminenta i rok emisji.
Poor (VII) - Moneta w fatalnym stanie. Trudności z określeniem eminenta i jednoznacznym zdefiniowaniem typu monety.

Skala Sheldona pochodzi od nazwiska dr Williama Sheldona, który zapoczątkował ją w 1949, zaś dziś jest przyjętym standartem w ocenie monet w USA, a także poprzez gro firm gradingowych (PCGS, NGC itd.).

Choice about uncirculated - AU58 - Virtually uncirculated, except for minor wear marks on high points. Nearly all mint luster must be present, and must have outstanding eye appeal.
Good About Uncirculated - AU55 - Sharp legends and devices show only a hint of wear on the high points. Remaining mint luster must be at least half; great eye appeal.
About uncirculated - AU53-AU50 - Sharp legends and devices show only a trace of wear on the highest points. There must be some remaining mint luster.
Choice extremely fine - XF45 - Legends and devices are clear and sharp, with slight wear on the high points, and great eye appeal.
Extremely fine - XF40 - Legends are sharp, devices are clear with slight but obvious wear on the high points.
Choice very fine - VF35- VF30 - VF25 - Legends are clear, devices show all detail with little wear; high points are lightly worn.
Very fine - VF20 - Clearly readable but lightly worn legends, devices show good detail, rims are clean, but the whole coin shows moderate wear on the high points and a little wear below.
Fine - Very Fine - F15
Fine - F12 - Distinct rim, all legends readable, clear devices showing some detail, but the whole coin is moderately, but evenly worn.
Very good - VG8 - Full rim with clearly discernable devices and features. Most legends are readable clearly, but the whole coin is still significantly worn.
Good-plus - G6 - Coin has a full rim plus major devices and features are clearly outlined. Heavy wear.
Good - G4 - Major devices and features are evident as outlines. although the coin overall is heavily worn.
About good - G3 - Type and date are discernable, although some spots may be worn out. Some lettering should be apparent, if not necessarily readable.
Fair - FR2 - Type and date are barely discernable, but otherwise the coin is damaged or extremely worn.
Poor - 1 - The type is barely discernable, but little else, due to the coin being badly damaged or worn smooth.
